Reader’s Question:

I recently had my car repainted here in Colorado. Does the color of my vehicle affect my insurance rates?

A recent survey said that almost thirty percent of Americans today believe that the color of their cars will affect their insurance rates. But for your information, most insurance companies in Colorado do not include car colors in assessing the premium prices for your car insurance. Although, there are still those who think that it is more expensive to insure black or red cars than cars with a white or gray color, it is the type of car beneath a particular color that will affect your premium rates, not the color itself.

However, there are a lot of factors that may affect your car insurance rates, starting with your personal profile. This includes your age, whether your married or not, as well as your gender. The car insurance company also considers your driving record and your insurance claims. Insurance companies will also inquire about your credit history to make sure that you are capable of paying your premiums. Having a lot of traffic violations may also cause your rates to shoot way up. Having a dangerous occupation can also make your insurance rates go higher due to the high risk it poses. And the distance you travel going to work has an impact on your rates, as well. Even the number of miles that you drove within the year will also be considered. A driver with lots of driving experience may have a lower insurance rate than a driver with no driving experience at all.

You can, however, consider adding more safety features to your car like anti-theft alarms or anti-lock break system to enjoy discounts. And, above all, being a safe and wise driver can help you save a lot on your car insurance premiums. So, forget about car colors and focus more on safe driving. And if you have more questions, go online or contact your local agent.
